"What is a Spirit-filled preacher? Many of
us have heard oratory and cleverness in the pulpit.
We've seen showmanship and listened to smoothly worded
phrases. In contrast to this, here is Peter, a
fisherman with no formal training in homiletics,
giving a simple but powerful message.
It is totally unprepared. Peter has no notes,
obviously. (Throughout the book of Acts, seldom does
the preacher know in advance that he's going to have
to speak; the occasion just pops up, and he opens his
mouth in expectation that God will fill it.) Still,
Peter begins in the common language of the people to
declare the gospel.
He has no rhyming outline, no alliteration, no soothing
poems. He is bold as he moves ahead. He is not
afraid to confront his listeners. Yet he is also
loving and compassionate. He drives straight toward
the need for each person to decide what to do about
Jesus Christ.
His message is not Law-centered but Christ-centered. He
doesn't push for people to join the church. He doesn't
call for the audience to promise to do better. Instead,
he points them to the Savior, urging them to repent, put
their faith in Christ, be baptized. . . ."
SoAmazing Review: At
its heart, Fresh Power's message is to
"humbly present Jesus." Cymbala relies on neither
stagecraft nor false emotion. He speaks from a heart
that is filled with the love of God through the power
of the Holy Spirit.
