Sounds Of Silence

"Think for a moment about your prayer
life. Could it be that it is characterized by
constant babbling? Might it be that even the chatter
of your mind is deafening? Could it be that your
shallow askings drown out the sound of the very One
whose voice you so long to hear? Have you ever
considered how glorious the sounds of silence might
be?
If not, I encourage you to develop the discipline
of listening for the voice of God. Three times God
called out to Samuel. But Samuel did not recognize
his voice. It was not until God spoke the fourth
time that Samuel said, 'Speak, for your servant is listening' (1 Samuel 3:10).
The Bible never encourages us to stamp out the self
as the Buddhists do. It does, however, exhort us
to stamp out the selfishness. Genuine prayer is not
found in our noisy askings and gettings; it is found
in a growing relationship with the Lover of our
souls. All too often we want God to move the fence
posts and enlarge our houses and lands. God wants
something far better for us. He wants us to be
still so that he can enlarge the territories of
our hearts. He has sent us sixty-six love letters
etched in heavenly handwriting. And the more we
meditate upon those words, the clearer his voice
will resonate in the sounds of our silence."
SoAmazing Review:
Hank Hanegraaf in The Prayer of Jesus
exhorts us to delve deeper into our relationship
with God. Prayer is more than our "shallow
askings." It is also a time for us to be silent and
listen . . . listen for God's voice.

"One benedictine friend, a gentle, thoughtful man who
has been in constant physical pain for years and is
now confined to a wheelchair, says of prayer, 'Often,
all I can do is to ask God, 'Lord, what is it you
want of me?'' From him I have learned that prayer
is not asking for what you think you want but asking
to be changed in ways you can't imagine. To be made
more grateful, more able to see the good in what you
have been given instead of always grieving for what
might have been." Kathleen Norris, p. 60,
