Unashamed
Women are not typically noted in Jewish genealogies in the Bible. Yet in the genealogy of Jesus, five women (Tamar,
Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Mary) are mentioned. While the series
A Lineage of Grace covers all five women, the book
Unashamed focuses on Rahab, an unlikely inclusion. Rahab was a
prostitute in Jericho who provided protection for Jewish spies. She and her family are
spared in the battle of Jericho, and Rahab ends up listed in the "Hall of Faith" in
Hebrews 11. Francine Rivers' fictionalized portrayal, done in her magnificent style,
brings Rahab to life.

The Prayer of Jabez
Between asking for blessings,
increasing your territory, enlisting God's power, and keeping away from evil, Jabez's
prayer covers a lot of ground. It is ground that all of us should cover. I would not be
surprised if The Prayer of Jabez, reaches the status of a "Christian
classic."

"Our culture tells us that to carry
our suffering with us is a weakness. We are made to
feel a little ashamed if we go on feeling pain after
the prescribed amount of weeping is done. So to
escape our shame, we disown our pain. We make believe
it is no longer part of us.
But we are wounded, forever wounded;
and to disown our wound is to be untrue to ourselves.
We cannot move on from a suffering chapter of our
stories without carrying the wounds with us into the
next chapter. The pain of one chapter becomes the scar
of the next.
A long time ago Doris and I lost our only biological
child. We suffered together. But each of also suffered
alone. I raged; she accepted. But when mourning time
was over, I went on as if I had left my grief behind
me.
Recently I visited the small spot of ground at the end
of a graveyard where we buried his small body so many
years ago. I was flooded again by my old sorrow. My
grief surprised me, embarrassed me. I thought it had
died and left me. Where did it come from, this old
sorrow?
It came from within me; it came from the the wound that
had been a part of me all these years, inflicted a long
time ago. The terrible pain is long gone, but the
wound remains. Wounds can be reopened. All it takes
is a fresh reminder. And it is honest and therefore
healthy to own the wound, to let it identify us, to
tell us who we are, for it is part of us forever."

In A Life of Distinction, What It Takes To Live
With Courage, Honesty and Gratitude Lewis B.
Smedes has written an excellent book where he shares his heart in stories of his life and in
observations of the stories of others he knows or has read about.
