"Judas moved forward and kissed the Lord on the cheek.

'Betrayal, by means of a kiss,' whispered the Carpenter. 'Father, permit even this.'

By now the mob following Judas had come into full view. There were hundreds in its ranks, the captain of the temple guard in the lead, the soldiers who protect the scribes and those assigned to protect the high priests following close on. Behind them were scores of other men carrying clubs.

Spying an army of this size, the disciples hesitated.

Jesus now moved past Judas toward the belligerent throng.

'Who is that half-dead wretch,' asked the captain of the guard, 'and why has Judas not signaled to us which of those men is the Nazarene?'

'Whom do you seek?' came the certained voice of the Carpenter, now almost face-to-face with the guardsman.

The captain's words were gruff and loud, spoken that they might be clearly heard by the eleven disciples standing in the distance. 'We seek Jesus of Nazareth,' he responded, even as he walked past the blood-soaked Carpenter.

'I am Jesus, whom you seek.'

The captain whirled about, and in so doing stumbled and fell. As he did, he carried others of the startled men with him. After a moment of ensuing confusion and no small amount of fear, the captain was back on his feet and facing the man who had spoken.

'Who are you?' he asked, his words still betraying uncertainty.

'I am Jesus, whom you seek.'

With that answer the captain found his voice and his courage.

'Bind him.'

Hearing those very unacceptable words, an angry archangel named Michael and an angry man named Peter lunged forward."
