"To really understand 'Christianity' we have to go back to the beginning, to put first things first.
For starters, Jesus was not a Christian. He never asked anyone to become a
Christian, never built a steepled building, never drew up a theological
treatise, never took an offering, never wore religious garments, never
incorporated for tax purposes . . . He simply called people to follow
him.
That's it. That, despite its simplicity, is it. He called people
to follow him. The first two were brothers: Simon and Andrew. Regular guys.
Simple fishermen. The first two Christians ever. Those brothers didn't think
at all about 'becoming Christians' or taking on a new religion.
Here was this thirty-year-old man (a carpenter) who simply said 'follow me.' And
they believed him."

"Jesus is still looking for people who will get out of the boat. Why
risk it? I believe there are many reasons:
----It is the only way to
real growth. ----It is the way true faith develops. ----It is the
alternative to boredom and stagnation that causes people to wither up and
die. ----It is part of discovering and obeying your calling.
I believe there are many good reasons to get out of the boat. But here is one
that trumps them all: The water is where Jesus is. The water may be dark,
wet, and dangerous. But Jesus is not in the boat. The main reason Peter got
out of the boat is that he wanted to be where Jesus was. Matthew keeps referring
to this reality. Peter's request is, 'Lord, if it's you, command me to come
to you.' Then Peter got out the boat 'came toward Jesus.'
