"The reality is that if religion is to be treated with intellectual respect, then it must stand the test of truth, regardless of the mood of the the day. This book is a defense of the uniqueness of the Christian message. . . .

The route I have followed is to present a clear difference between Jesus and any other claimant to divinity or prophetic status. I have taken six questions that Jesus answered in a way that none other would have answered. An opponent may disagree with His answers, but when those answers are all added up, antagonists will not be able to challenge His uniqueness . . . .

My earnest prayer is that when you read this, you will make your judgment of the Christian message based on truth, not the mood of our times. Moods change. Truth does not."

SoAmazing Review: Jesus Among Other Gods explains why Christianity is unique. Discover how powerfully Jesus' claim to be "The Way, the Truth, and the Life," so dramatically distinguishes Christianity from Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism

Father to Son:

"But every time I hear you go off on this free will business I'm nagged with this question: I always thought that Christians believed that God is all-powerful as well as all-loving. When Arlyle died, the priest attributed it to 'the mysterious will of God.' Mysterious indeed! It crushed me emotionally and left me with four motherless children to raise, and no means to do it! But aren't Christians always saying, in the face of tragedy, 'God has a purpose?' "

Son to Father:

"Is my God all-powerful? I want to answer yes and no. Let me explain myself. It is my view (which I believe to be biblical) that God is all-powerful in the sense that God originally possessed all power. Before Creation, God was the only being who existed, and thus had all the power there was. He could do anything, and nothing opposed Him.

But with the creation of free creatures, I maintain, God necessarily surrendered a degree of His power. Or perhaps it is better to say God delegated some of His power. Our freedom is a little piece of 'controlling power' lent us by God. In order to allow creatures to be free, then, God voluntarily gives us a portion of His power, and thereby surrenders His opportunity to 'always get His way.' I don't think it could be any other way, for freedom must entail that the free person can decide his own way--and it may not agree with God's way. It is utterly impossible for God to be always in control, and yet allow free beings to exercise some control. Thus, to the extent that God 'lends' power away, he no longer utilizes it . . . .

I know Christians frequently speak about 'the purpose of God' in the midst of a tragedy caused by someone else. There was a young girl this year at Bethel who was killed by a drunk driver, and a lot of students were wondering what purpose God had in 'taking her home.' But this I regard to simply be a piously confused way of thinking. The drunk driver alone is to blame for the girl's untimely death. The only purpose of God in the whole thing is His design to allow morally responsible people the right to decide whether to drink responsibly or irresponsibly."

SoAmazing Review: You will appreciate the spirit in which this agressive dialogue is conducted. It proceeds at high levels of both intellect and sincerity. Both father and son exhibit respect and love for each other.
