"A bad attitude is like a fire; it continues to grow in intensity and destructiveness if it is left unattended. If we see a fire starting, we would be foolish to think that because it is only a small fire, it will soon burn itself out. An untended fire will only strengthen in intensity. If we run from it, it will spread. If we try to cover it up, it will smolder. If we fight it with a water pistol, it will create some steam. The best way to handle a growing fire is to fight it with the proper equipment.

The most effective way to handle a bad attitude is to engage in the battle. You are welcome to use whatever tools you think will work, but if the results are not satisfactory, then keep reading.

The truth about well-handled conflict is this; conflict with kids connects them with parents. Many parents are afraid that conflict will drive their kids away. That is true only if the conflict is handled poorly. If conflict is handled well, it serves to knit people's hearts together. If a fire is contained in the hearth, everyone gathers around it. A campfire provides intimacy, warmth, and comfort. Just as fire handled carelessly will destroy, conflict without boundaries will harm relations.

Conflict offers parents one of the most valuable teaching opportunities. The richest teachable moments you could ever ask for are right in the midst of conflict. When your children challenge you and your authority, recognize the challenge as a valuable opportunity to teach them the importance of respect and submission in a God-honoring way. You won't ever have to lecture them on the ways to resolve conflict; they will be learning it by how you treat them."
